Energy Edge Computing
Build energy applications that work anywhere, offline or online, in real-time.
Sync essential data to the cloud when a network connection is available.
Edge Computing:
Essential for Energy & Utilities
The energy industry is still in the process of digitizing. Data-driven solutions enhance efficiency, boost performance and reduce costs. For the energy sector, Edge Computing is an essential driver of digitization processes, because the sector needs applications that work offline, independent from a constant Internet connection, reliable and in (near) realtime.
With ObjectBox, data can be stored and collected when devices are offline, and real-time autonomous actions can be put into effect immediately. When there is a network connection, essential pieces of data can be synced to a central server, using ObjectBox Sync. This ensures that limited bandwidth is not clogged with trivial data, and cloud costs are kept to a minimum, while still providing important information centrally.
ObjectBox Empowers Energy Edge Computing
Digitalization: Applications that work offline, on the edge
By collecting, analyzing, and visualizing data, energy companies can improve efficiency, bring down OPEX costs, and safeguard against dangerous and expensive operative failures. Edge computing enables this digitalization in the form of intelligence and autonomy at the edge of energy grids. This distributed intelligence pushed out to the edge of the grid adds flexibility, resilience, and improves grid performance and management.
Sync Data on-site while offline and to a Central Instance when connected
Edge Computing makes use of the data on the devices it is created on, or very close by. Often at one site you have several devices that collect and use data. ObjectBox takes care data is available when needed, where needed by synchronizing data across devices, e.g. from sensors to gateways to a server or worker phones and tablets to machines and gateways. Often, some of that data needs to be accessible to multiple stakeholders located offsite, e.g. on a central company dashboard. With ObjectBox Sync, this essential data can be synchronized efficiently to the cloud or a central server when a connection is available, also taking care of flaky connections. By only syncing relevant data, companies can cut down on cloud costs, data transfer costs, and create a more sustainable and resilient computing paradigm.
Improve Data Interoperability Across Devices and Sites
One of the biggest challenges in digitization is the magnitude and variability of data collected. Therefore, many industries work on standardizing data formats, e.g. the Oli & Gas industry, to enable data exchange and interoperability while also improving data quality and preventing errors. ObjectBox further improves data interoperability with a database that can sit on a large variety of devices from sensors to gateways to phones, tablets, and servers. This unique support of devices enables companies to use the same code base across all their devices, enabling a faster go-to-market and better interoperability while also being able to reliably persist and synchronize data as needed.
Energy Use Cases Utilizing Edge Computing
Wind Farm Edge Analytics
Sustainable forms of energy like wind turbines, are often located in remote and poorly connected areas. On a wind farm, ObjectBox allows applications to collect real-time data, giving insights into e.g. technical issues, wind speeds or the amount of energy generated. Most of this data can stay on the edge and only needs to be synchronized to a central server if outliers occur, e.g. data falls outside a predefined range, or when pulled, e.g. by a worker from a central instance, or accumulated in defined intervals.
Oil & Gas on the Edge
Many oil and gas companies need to collect and use data on the edge as facilities are often in remote and badly connected locations. These companies often require real-time response rates for critical maintenance applications, or offline synchronization on-site or looking to reliably synchronize parts of the data when a connection is available. With ObjectBox data is persisted on edge devices reliably and synchronized on site as needed. Data needed in the cloud or a central instance apart from the location, for example data anomalies or a summary of data analyzed on the edge, is efficiently and reliably synchronized when a connection is available.
Energy Grid Management
The future of the energy grid will be highly decentralized, and edge computing will be a key technology to make this shift possible. Using edge computing, energy companies can implement real-time demand management and grid optimization applications that work online and offline. These tools will improve operational efficiency and improve grid resilience. ObjectBox is a key base technology to empower edge computing, by providing the technology to store data on edge devices and synchronize reliably and efficiently between edge devices as well as essential data to a central server, when connected as needed.
ObjectBox in a Nutshell
SUPERFAST DATABASE
ObjectBox is a high performance data storage solution for IoT and Mobile devices. For the devs: embedded, object-oriented, NoSQL, ACID compliant, <1MB footprint, time series feature, 10x faster than alternatives (see open source benchmarks).
data sync
ObjectBox Sync syncs the data you want to sync between edge device and the cloud automatically for you. It’s super efficient, so it saves energy and cloud costs. It is out-of-the-box, so developers save time and can go to market faster.
why edge computing?
Edge Computing keeps data local, and makes data storage and processing: sustainable, efficient, real-time, offline, and secure. We believe Edge Computing is the future of computing, and we aren’t the only ones.
